Determined to design a better bench chisel, IBC and I teamed up and developed what I consider to be the best woodworking bench chisel on the market today.  These chisels meet all five criteria of a great bench chisel: comfortable, high quality steel, bevel on the side with a small flat, flat back, and the ability to change handles.

Product Details:

  • Size:  Bench chisel handle length: approximately 3.9 inches. Bench chisel total length: approximately 9 inches. Bench chisel blade length, including the tang is approximately 6 inches. Blade width: 1/2 inch.
  • Handle: Cherry handle is turned precisely on a lathe so it fits nicely to the ferrule and the end cap and have a butter smooth surface.  Shaped for a comfortable grip in the hand, they are finished with three coats of oil.

  • Steel:  Made from AISI High Vanadium A2 tool which holds an edge beautifuy.  Fully stress relieved, triple tempered, cryogenically treated and hardened to 60-62 HRC.  Primary bevel is ground to 25°.

  • Flat Back.  Each chisel is tested on a granite reference surface to ensure the back is flat to within .0005 of an inch.

  • Design: The blade tang extends through a hardened steel ferrule and into a threaded hardened steel core that is inserted through the center of the wood handle and is securely attached to an aluminum striking cap.  This design allows you to easily replace the standard cherry handle with your own custom turned wood handle.

  • Made in Canada

Workmanship

It is obvious RC is proud of what they do. Polished the back like instructed, put an edge on it and went to work. Excellent tool.

Outstanding Chisel

I was very impressed with the quality of the IBC 1/2" Bench Chisel. Great ergonomics, great design (flat back after breaking down the handle for easy sharpening, and very thin vertical portion on the sides increasing clearance). As well it arrived extremely sharp. I look forward to filling out my future chisel needs with IBC. I'm thinking a dovetail next.

Nice chisel

Great quality chisel. Fun to use once it's all prepared. Only down side is the handle keeps unscrewing while I am using it. Probably because I don't tighten it enough. But I am afraid to break the nice cherry handle if it's too tight.

Good chisel!

I bought one of Rob’s chisels to grind to his 17 degree bevel so I can have one reserved for use with soft woods like white pine, as Rob recommends. I found out in the process that I really love the feel of the handle and the balance of the chisel. So that’s a bummer because now I find myself thinking about getting more of these to use with their regular bevel angles for hardwoods, but (a) they are pricey and (b) I already have a good set of chisels I really like (steel, edge, design) except for their balance in hand. Damn you Rob!

Have not sharpened yet. Like all the other products I have purchased its quality will be top notch as expected.
