Jack planes are general-purpose bench planes, typically with bodies between 13 and 16 inches long. As the name implies they are a "jack of all trades" and can perform most of the work of a smoother and on small and medium stock can perform as a jointer plane.
I use my WoodRiver No. 5-1/2 Jack plane for 85% of all my planing operations. It is my "go to" plane and I recommend it as your first plane purchase.
Plane Description

No. 5-1/2 Plane size: 2-7/8" wide x 14-15/16" long with a 2-3/8"-wide blade
- Heavy, stress-relieved ductile iron castings.

Fully machined adjustable frogs bedded at a 45 degree angle.

Thick (.125 inch) steel blade and chipbreaker dampens vibration making solid planing.
- Rockwell 60-62 hardness blade

Lightly finished Bubinga handles provide comfort and control.

Soles and sides are machined flat and square within tightly held tolerances.

Our Plane Preparation Service includes:

Chamfer / ease the edges of the plane.

Tune the lateral adjustment lever.

Remove all of the shipping grease.
- Ensure the sides are within +/- 0.0015 of an inch square to the sole.

Flatten the back of the lever cap.

Flatten and fit the chip-breaker to the blade.

Apply a back bevel and sharpen the blade.

Test the plane for proper operation and set-up.

Apply a light coat of Camellia oil to prevent rust.

I could not be happier with my recent purchase of my WoodRiver 5-1/2 with Rob Cosman Preperation Service. It arrived from the USA in perfect condition. In the short time I have used it it has performed great giving off sub tho shavings right out of the box. This is mainly due to Rob's Preperation Service. Even though I paid VAT and customs, I don't regret it, as this kind of tool cannot be bought in Serbia. The plane is especially great for beginners. I literally just loosened the screw on a lever cap a little, made some lateral adjustment, and you can see the result in the picture. I'm loving it. Oh, and receiving a call from Rob was totally unexpected bonus :) A big thank you to Rob and the team.

From the moment you take it out the box it feels good, and the machining looks terrific. The blade sharpened to a razer edge in a matter of minutes and most of that was getting my kit out, setting up was a breeze and cutting! It cuts finer and leaves a better finish than any of my other planes. The setup and ballane of the plane makes you feel fully in control .This tool is a thing of beauty and acts as inspiration to work to a higher level.
