The No. 6 plane, sometimes referred to as a "fore" plane, shares characteristics with the Jack and Jointer planes. For those on limited budget I recommend purchasing a No. 6 for your Jack and Jointer needs and a No. 4-1/2 for your smoother needs. This combination will take care of 95% of your bench plane needs.
Plane Description

No. 6 Plane size: 2-7/8” W x 17-3/4”L with 2-3/8”W blade
- Heavy, stress-relieved ductile iron castings.

Fully machined adjustable frogs bedded at a 45 degree angle.

Thick steel blade and chipbreaker dampens vibration making solid planing.

Lightly finished Bubinga handles provide comfort and control.

Soles and sides are machined flat and square within tightly held tolerances.

PLANE PREPARATION SERVICE.
All planes require some preparation. Our plane preparation service is designed so that no set-up is required by you. Your plane will be ready to use 'out-of-the-box! Our Plane Preparation Service includes:

Chamfer / ease the edges of the plane.

Tune the lateral adjustment lever.

Remove all of the shipping grease.
- Ensure the sides are within +/- 0.0015 of an inch square to the sole.

Flatten the back of the lever cap.

Flatten and fit the chip-breaker to the blade.

Apply a back bevel and sharpen the blade.

Test the plane for proper operation and set-up.

Apply a light coat of Camellia oil to prevent rust.

CanadaCosman #6 fore plane
Excellent tool. I bought it for two main uses: shooting, and jointing musical instrument parts. I have a Veritas low angle jack, which is an excellent plane but performs poorly for shooting. The RC plane is a dream for shooting, partly because it is so beefy. It is plenty long for the jointing I need to do. Worth the investment for sure.
